Obituary of George Richard McGregor

George Richard “Dick” McGregor

Passed away on February 24th at the age of 84.

Dick was born September 1940 to George and Helen (Phoenix), fourth of five children in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan.

In 1945 The McGregor family relocated to London, Ontario, where Dick, along with his brothers Tom and Ron and neighborhood boys, played football and hockey.

Dick was introduced to his love, Marie Thompson, by his sister, who worked with her. After Dick and Marie married in May 1965, they moved to Hamilton, Ontario, and welcomed their first daughter, April Ann, in February 1966. Their second daughter, Denise, was born in June 1968. They briefly relocated to St. Thomas, Ontario, but Dick, who had backpacked across Canada at the age of 19, felt a strong pull towards Quesnel, BC. Dick, Marie, and their two daughters moved to Quesnel, where they lived a short time with Dick’s maternal Uncle George, and Aunt Mert Phoenix. Dick and Marie added two more daughters, Jennifer and Cheryl and their family was complete.

Dick worked at Quesnel Machinery, where he met his future business partner, George Dagenais. In 1980, two friends, Dick and George, teamed up to create a business called Carmar Supplies, named in honor of their wives, Carol and Marie. Their hard work paid off, and the business thrived!  After many successful years, Dick and George happily retired in 2007, leaving behind a legacy they can be proud of.

After retiring, Dick embraced life by playing golf and sharing coffee with friends. Following the loss of Marie in 2011, he ventured out to explore the world. One of his most cherished experiences was a trip to Scotland, where he acquired a full McGregor kilt, proudly wearing it at family weddings.

Dick’s humor and wit shone through, as he always had a “dumb dad joke” ready to brighten someone’s day. A true social butterfly, he touched the hearts of many with his laughter and joy.

Dick/Richard/Dad/Grandpa/Great Grandpa will be missed by many families and friends.

Till we meet again.
